Well researched book about Africa - Sudan. Reader certainly gains much background knowledge regarding the cultures and the causes of the long wars there. (Text makes you angry and depressed at times because of the gross injustices depicted.) The reader also gains insight on the workings and limitations of relief organizations.
The fiction and characters are blended into the factual setting. The problem with the novel is the length. It's over 650 pages. After 150 pages, I had a realistic sense of the suffering/war in Sudan and the fiction itself wasn't that compelling - so I gave up on this book.
If you have plenty of time, the novel is probably worth completing.

Story of daughters - raised Catholic - who slowly unravel the European history of their parents - Jewish survivors of WWII. The chaos and horror of the period (1930's - 1940's) is well documented in this book.
The parents who were forced to abandon Judaism to survive, did not wish to relive this past with their daughters -so the truth was a challenge to obtain.
All in all, an eye-opening book.

This novel revealed many interesting facts re: planes, carriers, and politics (in the airline industry). The plot was plausible and suspenseful. The main characters were well drawn and believable. Overall, this book represents a solid effort and is well worth reading.

A good novel and quick read... Society, parties, mobsters, alcohol - somewhat reminiscent of "The Great Gatsby". However,I would not place this author on the same level of F. Scott Fitzerald, Hemingway or Steinbeck. Still, this is a quite interesting work with excellent character development. Some of the language is dated.

I agree with those reviewers who state this book has a misleading title. What is explored is the whole phenomenon of early christianity and its literature. The gospel of Thomas is not the major focus of the book. In fact, Dr. Pagels devoted many more pages to the gospel of John. In any case, the value of this work, is the convincing arguments that the early church was very diverse. She elucidated the process by which a unified "orthodox" church eventually emerged - after hundreds of years.
All in all, I have given the book a rating of 3 stars. In this area, I prefer Dr. Bart Ehrman - who is more readable.
