This the 3rd book in the "Vampire Diaries: The Return" series. It is a bit predicable in spots, but LJ Smith does add some twists and secrets that you do not see coming. I really like the discovery of Meredith's secrets, but she leaves a few things unexplored. I loved the how Damon & Elena's relationship was developed and explored in Shadow Souls -- I wish there was more of it in this book (as you can tell, I'm pro-Damon..lol) But Stefan is back from the Dark Deminision, so obviously, the Stefan-Elena romance is back in front. LJ Smith does a good job tying everything all the together, including the books from her original Vampire series, and answering many questions. For the most part, she gives the reader a nice and tidy ending, but I liked how she left an opportunity for interpreation for what may be in the future.

I really enjoyed Midnight and I'm very disappointed that L.J. Smith can not complete the series. I feel like we're getting cheated by the publishers. And based on L.J. Smith's website post she was very much cheated by them as well. I fought tooth and nail to write those books--I fought until my agent wouldn't support me, when she said I would be sued and she wouldn't fight with me anymore, and I WROTE Phantom. But instead of edits what I got back was a letter to Clare the ghostwriter telling her to completely change my book. I HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. I was deceived by Alloy and got no support from Harper.

The author has asked fans to help spread the word that she didn't quit the series. She was fired. It's so unfair!
