.) All Locked Up - any book involving the imprisonment of one of the characters.  Cruel as the Grave by Sharon Kay Penman:  Another light and enjoyable mystery by Penman.  Justin's romance with Claudine is rocky.  He seeks the murderer of Melangell, the pretty daughter of the peddler.  The nephews of the woman who nursed Justin when he was injured are accused of the deed but did one or both of them do it?  And, Prince John is moving to take the crown of his imprisoned brother, occupying the castle at Windsor.

.) The King's Progress - any book which involves a mystery while traveling, The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton:  Obtained this one from the library, too, in an attempt to keep the WL at lower levels. Morton's approach in this novel is quite different from Distant Hours.  Nevertheless, I do like this technique where she goes back and forth in time with different story tellers.  Having searched for ancesters myself, I understand Cassandra's fascination for solving the mystery of her grandmother's background.   The story is told by so many voices but the author has such talent that the tale seems to flow flawlessly.   At the age of four Nell was abandoned on a ship heading for Australia.   Who was she?   Who were her parents?  Where was her family?  While she grows up in loving family when she discovers that abandonment she searches her memories and whatever clues she can find to discover who she is.   Why did her mother leave her alone on this ship?    Didn't her mother care about her?   Nell unearths part of the secret but the rest remains for her granddaughter, Cassandra, to unravel after Nell's death.   Cassandra, her grandmother Nell and Eliza told their portions with such deep emotion.  Unraveling the mystery is at last completed by Cassandra who follows her grandmother's footsteps to uncover her true identity.    The truth is strange indeed.   What a wonderful story!
.) A Little Help From My Friends - any book in which the protagonist gets some assistance in handling the case from another party.   The Dead Travel Fast by Deanna Raybourn:  This is an interesting little historical read that takes place in Transylvania.  Theodora is an author who has traveled to this country to spend time with a good friend who she believes is to marry the count.  Amidst beliefs of vampires and werewolves a young woman dies and the count falls or is pushed from an observation walk. Who or what is responsible for these strange events?  And, when Theodora is blamed for both events how can she prove otherwise.  The only way is to find out who or what is responsible.  She has help from the count himself in solving the murder.
.) Double, Double, Toil and Trouble - any book which has a supernatural element to it.   Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear (revisits ghost she left behind):  Didn't realize that I would enjoy this book as much as I have.  It's a wonderful story about a bright young woman who, in spite of her humble origins, is able to attain her potential.  Maisie becomes a private detective, modelling her life after her mentor, Maurice Blanche.  Devouring classics and philosophy tomes, she earns a place in a women's college.  With the war in progress, she lies about her age, obtains forged papers, and becomes a nurse who is stationed at the front.  There is romance and mystery in this little read.  It's a very good read.
.) Just Hangin' Around - any book which involves the gallows or a witch in some way.  The Queen's Man by Sharon Kay Penman (incidental characters to be hanged):  A light and enjoyable little read.  I particularly liked Justin, cool hero, and his buddy, Luke, the undersheriff.  The Queen and Nell are wonderful role models for the time.
.) The Benefits of a Higher Education - any book in which a university is involved - or a scholar.   Mistress in the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin:   Truly enjoyed this novel with the non-traditional heroine - Adelia, described on the book cover as a prodigy from the Medical School of Salerno.  Often I felt as if I was walking next to Adelia as she struggled in a world dominated by men, the church and royal edict.  So many children were murdered in Cambridge and she lost her chief investigator, Simon, who was likewise murdered, I grieved with her.  And when Adelia stumbled across the murderer's lair, I feared for her life.  In such a world, Adelia was a bright spot - an intelligent questioning soul who was not afraid to speak her mind.  However, I couldn't help wondering if the scenes with the king could be possible but many changes did occur under the reign of King Henry II.  At the end of the book, the author discussed the changes made to fit the story she created and those facts that were substantiated or mostly likely possible.  Most seemed appropriate except perhaps the many geographical changes but I can accept those as well.  A very good read by a talented author.
7.  Plague, Poison or Pox? - any book which involves any of these potential threats to life.  The Serpent's Tale by Ariana Franklin.  Another medieval good mystery by Ariana Franklin. Adelia and Rowley find themselves in turmoil as they try to solve the murder of Rosamund, a mistress of the king. Eleanor, the queen, is strongly suspected of having arranged the murder. A basket of mushrooms containing the death cap was delivered to the castle when the only person present is a simple servant who accepts it, knowing that Rosamund loves mushrooms. A snowstorm traps the suspects and Rosamund in a convent after Rowley disappears into an icy cold river. Found it difficult to accept that he could survive in such conditions but he does. Meanwhile Adelia and her child Allie are trapped with the murderer or murderers, the queen, soldiers and clergy as resources are strained with the needs of the trapped people. A handsome young man is found murdered, shot with a crossbow, on the bridge to the convent and the simple servant is found hangings from a hook. Not suicide but another murder. When an attempt to burn down the cell where Rosamund's housekeeper is imprisoned, Adelia is sure everyone is in peril. And, her child sleeping in her basket is found outside their room just a few inches from a 20 foot drop. Adelia is so frightened that she wants to return to Italy to keep her child safe. Can she solve the murders without endangering herself and Allie. Only time will tell.
.) This Could Be the Start of Something Grand - The first book in a mystery series that intrigues you.  Veil of Lies by Jeri Westerson (first book I've read by this author):   Crispin Guest is known as The Tracker.  A former knight who lost his status due to a youthful rash decision, he has become an investigator who has a love/hate relationship with the sheriff.  Crispin becomes involved when a man asks him to discover whether or not his wife is being unfaithful to him.  Reluctantly he accepts the case but when he goes to report to the man that she is unfaithful, Crispin finds the man has been murdered.  Since he has not been paid he vows to discover the murderer.  One thing leads to another and national politics becomes part of the case.  Crispin gets beaten a few times, thrown into the river, falls in love with the wife of the murdered man and works to untangle this mysterious web not the least of which is a fabric piece with the picture of a bearded man which supposedly has mysterious powers.  It's a good fast read.
