That the implicit Faith required in the Church of Rome is aftrong Prefumption that her Faith and Religion are erroneous. IMpIicit Faith, taken in the Senfe wherein the Guides of the Church of Rome require it, is, your believing whatever fhe teaches, altho' you don't know what fhe teaches, or, if you do know what ifci your aflenting to it, without having in your Mind any Proof or Reafon to determine your Judgment, and to induce your Aflent, befides the Authority and Determination of the Church. I don't pretend to fay, this, in all Cafes, is an irrational Thing: For there are fome Cafes, wherein it is the moft reafonable Thing a Perfon can do; nay, wherein it is abfolutely neceffary. Children muft believe implicitly ; and of thofe who are grown up, the Underftandings of fome are fo low, and their Capacities fo fmall, that they can fcarcely receive the great Principles and Doctrines of Religion, or learn what they are, but, to be fure, are quite unable to make any folid and reafonable Judgment concerning the Truth or Falfchood of them: And fome, of better Underftandings, are too lazy and indolent to give themfelves any Thought about fuch Things, and fo, upon the Matter, are almoft as ignorant as the other. What are thefe Men now to do ? Muft they live and die without believing, or thinking, one way or other, concerning religious Things ? Muft they have no Per- fuafion, no Belief, about them ?
