This is a highly readable book about the turning of the 13 colonies into the United States of America. The colonies banded together for the War for Independence but planned to go their separate ways after the winning of the war. George Washington, James Madison, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton were the quartet that moved the individual states into a united body.

The author's writing style is beautiful. The author shows how a group of intelligent men cobbled together a new nation from the failures of the Articles of Confederation (which was in place during the Revolutionary War and immediately afterward).
