Author David K. Shipler's interactions with the people he met in Russia- citizens from all walks of life- are at the heart of this involving personal narrative. It's a perceptive, incisive, subtle portrait of Russia, elegantly written.

I loved this book. The spirit and grit of the Russian people shines through on every page. I haven't been to Russia yet but I hope to go and travel widely.
