SIGN-TALKER is a really interesting book--the kind you can hardly put down, even if it's after midnight! It's based on authentic information; the 'SignTalker' was a real person, and the author has done significant research. I have read 2 other books of Mr. Thom's (Follow the River, and The Children of First Man), and am going to read Panther in the Sky right now.

I have read a number of James Alexander Thom's books, starting with Follow the River, and enjoyed them all. The story of George Drouillard fleshes out the story of Lewis and Clark by getting inside this young man's head. Thom's style is meaty and earthy, with fabulously clear and accurate descriptions of the environment in which the party found themselves. I particularly valued Thom's well-rounded character development of the protagonist, which also shed light on the personalities of Captains Lewis and Clark. Not everyone has such a distinct understanding of the native American psyche.
