WICCAN COOL is the third book in the Rhiannon Godfrey series. WICCAN COOL was one wicked cool (sorry, I had to use that pun, it was just itching to come out!) story. Rhiannon "Rhee" Godfrey, in all her freak non-normal persona, is one enjoyable girl worth spending some time getting to know.
Rhee is getting settled into life at her new school and slowly fitting in with a small group of friends. She still has her enemies, and that base expands when a new girl, Casey, moves to town and jumps right in trying to steal Rhee's boy/friend (?), Jared.
On top of dealing with Casey (and still dealing with Jared's sister, Janet, enemy #1), Rhee is forced into doing community service hours at the hospital. Everyone at school has to do community service, and Rhee got stuck with her least favorite. Her mom, Starla, feels it will be good for her, and grudgingly Rhee reports for her first day.
She is surprised to find that Dane, a boy she met at the local ice cream parlor, is her volunteer trainer. They are assigned to the children's cancer ward. Rhee is caught off guard with empathetic feelings she didn't know she had and is unable to cope with the sadness she experiences on the ward.
WICCAN COOL progresses with Rhee trying to survive her community service hours and wanting to be "normal," without any paranormal powers. She goes so far as to being hypnotized so she can "lose" her powers for two weeks to feel what it really means to be normal. But as soon as she loses her powers, she finds out Dane has his own powers, she can no longer mentally communicate with her mom, AND she encounters a spirit who doesn't want her there.
As mentioned, this is the third book in the series, but I haven't read the previous two releases, nor did it hinder me from enjoying this novel. Yes, there was some backstory mentioned that I was not privy to since I hadn't read the other two (HER WICCAN, WICCAN WAYS and SOMETHING WICCAN THIS WAY COMES), but that didn't prevent me from following the action in this story.
If I have any negatives for WICCAN COOL, it would only be one. Rhee is supposed to be a freshman in high school, but I had a hard time wrapping my head around that fact. Then again, if I'd read the first two books in the series, it might not be so hard to believe. Rhiannon is only fifteen in the story, yet somehow she comes across far older than that. It's just a little gripe, though, and my personal opinion. It does nothing to the overall enjoyment of the story, and I know I will be looking out for the first two books now (to catch up on that backstory!) and keeping an eye open for future adventures featuring Rhiannon Godfrey.
