Excerpt: CHAPTER III THE AUTHOR GOES TO ROME It is not to be wondered at that so bold an attack on the traditional methods should have raised a storm in the theological world. It was generally considered, amongst the older clergy, that the author had undermined the only possible basis of religion; that, in his criticism of individual reason, he had destroyed that very authority whose prerogatives he had wished to defend. Thus, in August 1820, Frayssinous wrote to him : ' I am sure you will not mind my telling you of the impression your second volume seems to have made on the clergy in general. They are unanimous on the strength and talent of the writer ; but they are frightened at the new philosophy it contains ; they fear that you may, on the one hand, have weakened the ordinary motives of credibility, and, on the other, exaggerated the scope of authority.' In October he received a letter from his old friend and adviser the Abbe Carron, who told him that the authorities at St. Sulpice criticised the book, as undermining the foundations of human certitude; he also suggested that he would have done well to consult some one more experienced than himself before enter- g on so dangerous a subject.
