Do you own this cookbook?  The Book Club in the Basement is cooking from it and discussing it at the end of July.  There are copies in the system, and plenty of time to order.  Come down and join us!  We are in the September Hot Topics forum, link in my sig line.

I used to own this cookbook, but I think it stayed with an exroommate. If I own it, it's in storage, waiting to be rescued. Now that I have my own place, I am trying to get things from storage a little at a time. I remeber it was a great cookbook and am looking forward to the discussion with great interst. I think I will see if my library has a copy just so I can participate.

We decided to keep cooking from this book, so join the discussion if you have it and cook from it.

After reading the posts here and on the hot topic forum I had to order the book.  It's on it's way to me and I'm so excited.  Thanks for posting.

I ordered the book based on this info and was a little disappointed in the book. It was too small for one and the recipes I was sure would be there were not. Was this out dated or only between certain dates? I did find a couple of recipes that sounded okay, but there should have been tons! What book am I looking for that has recipes from boxes, cans, packages, etc.... the popular one's like pecan pie brownies and bisquick recipes, the campbell soup recipes, etc.... I am not sure why these were not there.... I was excepting the BIG cookbook size I guess..... Any recomendations?

I'm so sorry you were disappointed.  But some of the companies put out their own cookbooks from time to time and may not give permission to other publishers to use their recipes.

I would like to join this "cooking club".  I have had this book for many years and have used it infrequently---but want to use it more.  The discussion over in the September Hot Topics thread hasn't had any activity since last December.  Can we move the discussion here and start fresh?

I propose we tackle the book chapter by chapter, each month.  First chapter: Appetizers Snacks, Noshes and Such.  How about, whoseever in the club, makes one or two appetizers for the month of October (it's only the 12th today, so there is plenty of time) and then report back how the went over.  Family loved or loathed?  Easy or difficult?  Expensive or costly?  Make again, or never again?.

Anybody interested?

Sure Stephanie, works for me.  We kinda petered out in the basement.   You could also send pm's to the others involved so they know about your discussion in the cooking forum.  I'm in, have to get the book out for appetizers and see what I want to do.  Thanks for getting it started again.

Carole, I PMed 7 or 8 members who participated before.  Let's see what kind of interest we get.  I think this will be fun.  I'll PM some more if we can get the ball rolling.

Hope so!

Sure, I'd be interested.  I like the idea of going chapter by chapter.

This will work great with my Guinea Pig Dinners.  Definitely count me in please.

I'm looking at the Antipasto for Eight and Mushroom-Cheese Appetizers

Now I have a question can I alter a recipe if some of the ingredients don't tempt me?

For example the Antipasto calls for Anchovies which really aren't my thing.  I tind them to salty.

I so hope the progresso olive oil is the one I have been looking for I really want a rich fruity flavored olive oil for my antipasto.

I'm so excited.  I'm definitely going to the store for the ingredients today.

I think the brands in the cookbook are irrelevant.  I buy Botticelli olive oil, I think it has a better flavor than Progresso.  If rich and fruity is what you are going for, look for an olive oil that is more green in color.

I would not have a problem with changing an ingredient to leave out something you don't like.  I hate celery and will leave it out of anything I cook.  Sometimes I substitute leeks if it is a cooked dish, or just leave it out of things served cold like chicken salad.

I would also propose to Stephanie that you start a new thread for each chapter.  That way the thread won't get overly long, plus we would be able to quickly come back to a particular chapter later for reference.

I didn't do this cookbook because I'm on a low sodium diet, I don't cook from boxes or cans anymore. If you get to a different one I might join in. I'm also moving in about a month and most of my less used cooking stuff is packed away already. I'm working with minimal equipment and supplies at the moment.

Are we all going to do different recipes?

I think we should all pick our own recipes, whatever appeals to us.  No way we could all agree, everyone's tastes are so different.  That way, we also get a lot more feed back on more recipes in the book.

I'm off to PM a few more people from the old thread to see if they'll join us.

i'm loving the way this is shaping up.  I got everything for the antipasto and the stuffed mushrooms.  I can't wait to make them.

Monday is super busy but hopefully tuesday will be perfect for cooking.

I think a thread per chapter sounds like a great idea.  So right about it being easier to get back to a post that way.

Good morning!!   I will start the new thread for October Appetizers in a little bit.  I have PMed the previous participants (hope I didn't miss anyone!), and most seemed into starting up again.  Yay!  If you guys can think of anyone who might like to join in, please send some PMs on your own.  The more the merrier.

Remember, we just need to make one or 2 recipes from the chapter for the month of october.  I know everyone's time is precious, so only make one if that's all you have time for.  However, check out the new thread to start posting all about it.  See you there soon.....

I've been talking about this with a friend and she mentioned the other day that she is going to pull out her crockpot.  I thought that was great.  I've been using my extensively.
