Set in present day, this is the third in the small-town police procedural series featuring Samuel Craddock, the ex- and now current sheriff of small Jarrett Creek in Texas. Jarrett Creek is almost bankrupt, with no money to pay the police force, so Craddock returns from retirement to fill the gap. The first thing he needs to do is solve the murder of Gary Dellmore, found shot after a contentious meeting about, yes, the police force. It turns out Gary has been doing a little con-man work, fiddling with the bank's loans and real-estate deals...not to mention having several adulterous affairs. Craddock relies on part-time deputies, old relationships and town gossip to ferret out the killer. A nice read, Craddock is very engaging (he has cows, gotta be a good guy) and I really like the depiction of the little town. It's told in present tense which every now and again jolts me for some reason. But it's a small thing, this is a good series and I'm definitely going to read more of them.

I just love Samuel Craddock! The small southern town and it's residents make for an entertaining read! Murder and mayhem, humor and heart. Fun mystery!
