Drew loves women (and they love him). He has an ongoing thing with Billie when he is in town. Billie also happens to be a prostitute. She unexpectant gets pregnant and elects to deliver the baby. She made a deal with her madam (Pearl) for pregnancy care and in exchange Pearl would get the baby (and sell to someone who wanted a baby- maybe). After baby is born Billie realizes who the dad is (she knows this d/t a distinctive birthmark that Drew also has). She also realizes she can't give the baby up to Pearl and Prince, so she ends up fleeing for her life. What added another layer to Billie's story is her history with Prince (Pearl's son). Prince is an awful person. In the past, Prince tried to assault her and she defended herself and shot Prince in the face. He is scarred as a result.
This was wonderful. I adored Billie. She was unapologetic and not ashamed of her history. Drew was a harder character to like; after Billie's pregnancy (and granted he didn't know) he was courting someone else "proper" to marry. He was nice and than an asshole to Billie (because of when she showed up and ruined engagement, etc). It took time for them to talk things out, admit feelings. Alanza (Drew's mom) was awesome!
This had a wonderful love story, some suspense, and some history. Could Billie be any more wonderful? (Changed to 5*, I write out thoughts as I read and had given this a 4*. But after thinking about it and typing this out, I'm changing it. This book is a 5. It's amazing).
