Both works could be used as ancillary materials to those teaching in bilingual programs, to translators and interpreters, and to those students interested in bilingualism and applied linguistics. Este estudio comprensivo de las normas sobre las cuales se ba¬san las lenguas castellana e in¬glesa ha sido diseñado para los que desean perfeccionar sus conocimientos de las estructuras fonémicas, ortográficas, morfológicas y sintácticas de ambas lenguas. A diferencia de las gramáticas convencionales, este texto presta especial atención a las áreas de la gramática que causan los mayores problemas tanto para el estudiante anglosajón que quiera aprender el español como para el hispanohablante que quiera aprender el inglés. El Cuaderno de Práctica contiene una serie integrada de ejercicios y pruebas que están alineados con el texto y que le ayudarán al estudiante a asimilar el material. El texto y el Cuaderno de Práctica podrían interesar a las universidades en sus programas de licenciatura y maestría tanto en los Estados Unidos como en España, Inglaterra e Hispanoamérica y podrían ser distribuidos a las bibliotecas. Los dos textos serán útiles como materiales suplementarios para los que enseñan en programas bilingües, para traductores e intérpretes, y para aquellos estudiantes interesados en el bilingüismo y la lingüística aplicada. Carmelo Gariano (1922-2004) led a wide-ranging career that included advanced degrees from the University of Catania and University of Buenos Aires, as well as a doctorate from the University of Chicago. He taught at several institutions, in particular, at California State University-Northridge, where he was selected as statewide Outstanding Professor. He published eighteen books of both fiction and nonfiction, authored numerous scholarly articles and other creative endeavors, and was an enthusiastic and inspirational speaker and teacher. Brian Castronovo (1949- ) received his M.A. degree in Spanish from Middlebury College and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has spent most of his career teaching Spanish linguistics at California State University-Northridge, where he received the Distinguished Teaching Award. He has published several scholarly articles in journals such as Hispania, Hispanic Linguistics, and the Boletín de la Real Academia Española. He is chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures and is Vice-President of the California State University Foreign Language Council.
