Fantastic! Loved every page of it!! Couldn't put it down until my eyes were too blurry to read. Highly recommend, hope everyone also read the other books in the series. I was concerned that a 'prequel' might not be to my taste, but I was oh so wrong.

When reading historical fiction, one can never be sure of what is the truth and what is the fabric of an author's fertile mind. That being said, this is a very well written tale that kept my attention throughout its reading. The self care and cleanliness of the time described (or lack thereof) made me wonder about all those people who say they want to live in far flung times. In any case, this is one of the few books that I have given a well deserved rating of five stars. Highly recommended!

This is the prequel of The Pillars of the Earth. The Vikings are raiding the English villages where Kingsbridge will be located. We learn about the life of Edgar, the builder. Alfred, The Monk and Ragna, the noblewoman. The characters and story are very interesting. Follett is a great writer but I can do without the crude language. I would recommend to those who love history.
