All the world talked about the coming bridal — that is all the world about Fairfield. It commented on the beauty of the bride, the riches of the bridegroom, gave its opinion as to the settlements, and, on the whole, took to the affair very kindly, and concluded that it was a very fortunate chance for the bride and her family. What if the bridegroom was a trifle older than the bride ? riches were youth and health the world said, and, indeed, better than either ; and so the world decided it was a good thing, and anticipated the event with all the whispering chatter and gossip usual on such occasions. All was bustle and preparation in the cottage where the bride lived with her mother and little blind brother. Beautifuldresses had come down from London and splendid jewellery—the bridegroom was lavish in his gifts for the adornment of his lovely wife that was to be ; and Mrs. Airton, proud as a mother should be, was busy from "dewy morn to starry eve" in selecting, arranging and inspecting her daughter's trousseau. Even little Andrew shared the general excitement, and crept about the house whispering or singing softly to himself, as the blind often do, very happy, though he could not see the beautiful things that were all for Kate. He could touch them and smooth them softly with his slender fingers, and whisper to them about his darling sister who was going away. The days passed swiftly,—the last days of Kate Airton's maiden life, and it was the eve before the bridal.
