Ian is both a professional firefighter and a member of a motorcycle club. He has been in love with Rory for a while. He gave her a cupcake on her 12th birthday on a rare trip to the store with her parents. Rory owns the local gun shop (inherited from her parents). She lives in a bunker below the shop.
This was interesting. Rory was an especially interesting character. She was raised by parents who were conspiracy nuts who had a fear and distrust of the government (and outside world). They made their own clothes, grew their own food, etc. She was raised in isolation- home schooled and not allowed to have friends. Ian made a large impression on her when they first met. I thought Rory was quick on her feet and adapted to having conversations with other people not about guns. She develops a friendship with Lou and the guys at the firestation. She is quick to jump to action and defend herself when her property has intrudes. And when Ian is arrested for HDG's (headless dead guy, AKA Willard Gray) murder (first book). Although HGD's murder is still unsolved in this one.
The romance is a slow burn which works. Rory and Ian gradually become friends and then progress to more. I learned a lot about Rory. Much less about Ian.
The epilogue has an introduction to Baxter Price, who was Gray's friend. He is paranoid
