Five Roundabouts to Heaven
Author: John Bingham
Told in flashbacks, this novel concerns Philip Bartel's attempts to leave his beautiful but cold wife Beatrice, for passionate Lorna. His friend Peter Harding offers advice, then he too meets Lorna, with fatal results. Even the narrator-hero's part in the tragedy is far from innocent.

Summary: Peter Harding and Philip Bartels meet up again in the French countryside of their youth a place that still holds the history and the dark secrets they share, tempered only slightly by time the place where Philip feeling trapped in a marriage hes no longer happy with, falls in love with the graceful/charming Lorna & decides to poison his wife Beatrice to avoid a humiliating divorce & spare her a lonely life invites Peter to come to lunch to meet Lorna& unwittingly sets off a shocking chain of events that will change all of their lives forever (as Peter comes to plan to steal Lorna).

Review: I agree that Bingham brilliantly captures the mindset of the 2 men - Philip's cold-hearted plans vs Peter's sincerity (with Bookgasm), that this tale is timeless (with Reviewing the Evidence) and that its dark humor and invigorating (& a bit shocking) plot earned its place on Keating's List of 100 Best Books.
