The Girl in the Spider's Web: A Lisbeth Salander novel (Millennium, Bk 4), continuing Stieg Larsson's Millennium Series.  The troubled genius hacker and crusading journalist thrilled the world in 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', 'The Girl Who Played with Fire', and 'The Gi...  more »'.   Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist return.  She is the girl with the dragon tattoo, a genius hacker and uncompromising misfit.  He is a crusading journalist whose championing of the truth often brings him to the brink of prosecution.

Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist have not been in touch for some time.  Late one night, Blomkvist receives a phone call from a source, renowned Swedish scientist Professor Balder, claiming to have information vital to the United States.  Warned that his life is in danger, but more concerned for his son's well-being, Balder wants Millennium to publish his story, and it is a terrifying one.  The implications are staggering.

More interesting to Blomkvist than Balder's world-leading advances in Artificial Intelligence, is his connection with a certain female superhacker.  Blomkvist, in desperate need of a scoop for Millennium, turns to Salander for help.  She, as usual, has her own agenda.  It seems that Salander, like Balder, is a target of ruthless cyber gangsters, and a violent criminal conspiracy that will very soon bring terror to the snowbound streets of Stockholm, to the Millennium team, and to Blomkvist and Salander themselves.  The secret they are both chasing is at the center of a tangled web of spies, cybercriminals, and governments around the world, and someone is prepared to kill to protect it...

Translated from the Swedish by George Goulding.

The first entry into the second trilogy of "The Girl . . . " series doesn't quite have the verve of the first three novels, but after a slow start -- which may just be a difference in Lagercrantz's style from that of the original author, Stieg Larsson, things do begin to pick up as the plot and action develop. Of course, with more involvement of the main character -- Lisbeth Salander -- the story definitely begins to pick up more lustre. All in all, a satisfying read that makes me want to move on to the next volume in the series.
