Jacqueline Winspear has created one of the most three-dimensional characters in the detective mystery genre, Maise Dobbs-- Lady something or other, but she never uses the title. Much of the alure of "Investigator / Psychologist" Dobbs is her backstory adventures, detailed in previous novels. This episode adds to the allure--at the very outbreak of WWII, Belgian refugees are being murdered and the head of the Belgian secret service in London wants Maise to catch the killer Scotland Yard is too busy to do. Maise maps her clues with shoe leather detection and clinical precision. And after a clandestine flight to Belgium, she has the culprit. A cast of intriguing characters and scenes move the story along. Maise Dobbs is an acquired taste, but worth the readers' investment.
