The Guncle - Guncle, Bk 1
Author: Steven Rowley
Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they come out to Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking and relating to two children, no matter how adorable, Patrick is...  more »

Add me to the long list of readers who adore this novel! If you haven't read The Guncle, add it to your TBR list now. The story is filled with humor, snark, grief, sadness, found family, biological family, and so much love.

In the midst of family tragedy, 40-ish retired(?) actor Patrick finds himself unexpectedly caring for his young niece and nephew at his luxurious home in Palm Springs. During their 90 days together, Patrick develops strong bonds with his niblings and processes his own grief.

I highly recommend reading this on audio It's narrated by its author Steven Rowley (pronounced roll-ee) who is outstanding at conveying so much personality to Patrick, Maisie, Grant, and the other characters in this delightful novel.

I had to see what all the hoopla was about. It was an enjoyable story: comedy, sadness, drama, all in one. Gay Uncle gets custody of two precocious children after their mother passes away and their father goes to rehab for three months. They totally settle into family life, while he obsesses about his career, his love life, and the lover who passed away.I liked it, but didn't LOVE it. Most books I have read this year, I loved!

The author did such a great job on what could have been just a slap-stick book. Such tenderness amidst the humor and sadness. Can't wait for the next one!

So disappointed as this book had rave reviews and promised to be funny, light-hearted, tender, etc. Well, it wasn't, at least not to me.
Patrick's best friend from college marries his brother but then dies of cancer. Patrick's brother ends up going to rehab so Patrick becomes an instant parent to his 9 yo niece and 6 yo nephew. He takes them from Connecticut to Palm Springs for the summer while his brother is drying out.
Patrick is 40-something washed up sitcom star, constantly referring to terms these poor kids don't understand and then ridiculing them because they don't know Dorothy Parker or Tab Hunter, or what a mimosa is. Good grief, where his is sense of compassion for two grieving kids??? He annoyed me throughout the book with lame jokes, over and over! I almost DNF but hoped for an ending I could enjoy. No, he continued his immature, borderline cruel treatment.
I don't know why so many readers loved this book. I thought he was a big jerk!
