The story of delicate, Lauren Holbrook and hellraising cattleman Jared Lockett. Theirs is a passionate and stormy love story, perfectly suited for one of the most provocative, compelling scenarios in the romance genre--a marriage of convenience.

This book is set in Texas, back in the days of cattle barons, railroads, and the conflicts they caused.. A young woman, Lauren Holbrook, is befriended by an elderly cattle baron, who invites her out West to visit him and his family and become a private secretary to his wife. Upon her arrival at his Texas mansion, Lauren begins to suspect that there is more going on than she was told about, and she finds herself embroiled in the problems and scandals of the Lockett dynasty--namely, that Olivia Lockett, the matriarch, expects her to marry the playboy heir to the estate! Lauren is torn between what she knows is right and her deep feelings for Jared, the man she must marry in name only.

Lauren Holbrook was orphaned as a young girl, and taken in by friends of her father. The self-appointed guardians are pressing her to marry a young preacher, who is devious and hateful. When Lauren receives an offer to work as a secretary for the wife a rancher, she accepts. When she arrives at the ranch, Lauren finds that her employer has died, the wife has no need of a secretary, and the son (Jared) believes her to have been his father's mistress. An involved story plot follows, which is often tortured, and pits the heroine against the hero, but it is still a good read.

The moment preacher's daughter Lauren Holbrook walked into the Texas mansion, she suspected she had been tricked. Instead of becoming wealthy Olivia Lockett's secretary, the matriarch presented her with a scandalous offer: to marry, in name only, the Lockett dynasty's heir.

This was a great love story with some mystery set in the early days of Texas when "horseless carriages" were just something you had heard about in the city.

I love this book. A great read. I couldn't put it down. I have actually read it a couple times now because the storyline is one that I really enjoyed. The struggles between the main couple is great. Lots of Romance, Struggle, anger, and tension that kept me interested to the very end.

The story is so exciting, each page makes me squirm in wonder to read what's next. In the beginning, I was frustrated in Jared's attitude towards the sweet, beautiful & innocent Lauren. Eventually, as I read along, I understood his indifference towards her, yet I still feel sorry for Lauren. I was relieved to see improvements in their relationship as the story progressed... this is also when the love story twist becomes heart warming. This book doesn't only concentrate on the hero/heroine alone. It contains many unique characters that surrounds the couple. Each character is described realistically & it makes you understand the hero more...

Sandra Brown is so prolific that it is sometimes difficult to remember later whether a particular book was worth reading. I seem to recall this one as a bit predictable.

There is a different cover but same book. Typical Texas romance of Sandra Brown. She thought she would become secretary to wealthy Olivia Lockett but found her self married to the Lockett dynasty's heir.

I loved this story. I loved reading about a woman whose lady like charm pierces the armor of an unlikely cowboy. He's been hurt by his family so many times that when he finds out that his father has arranged to marry him off to a lady with impeccable reputation he feels like theirs no way he'll fall in love with her. Little odes he realize that from the moment he meet her he wanted to break down her reserve and claim her as her own.

Instead of becoming wealthy Olivia Lockett's secretary, the matriarch presented her with a scandalous offer: to marry, in name only, the Lockett's dynasty's heir - playboy rebel Jared Lockett. Lauren could not know Olivia's real motive, but she was achingly aware of her feelings for Jared. Now, in spite of terrible risks, she had to trust her reckless husband - and fight to make their marriage as strong as her love.

Typical historical romance fair - again, brain candy!
