This historical novel for older children, set in the U.S. in 1917, tackles the fight for woman's suffrage, discrimination against African-Americans, repression against leftists, and anti-immigrant bias all in one book! It also has hobos who steal rides on freight trains, and girls who run away from repressive parents and from schools that teach black girls how to be maids. World War I and the flu epidemic are touched on also. The book is well-written and full of action, but it will take a determined reader to keep track of all that is happening.
