This is an audiobook that I listened to with Benjamin Soames as the narrator. I thought he added much to the light-hearted explanation of the kings and queens of England. Because this book is geared for 8 to 14-year-olds (grades 3 through 8th), the book aims to give a straightforward explanation of what was important about each ruler, the times of his/her rule, the things they didn't do well, and perhaps some insight into why they were or weren't considered to be a good ruler.
As a way to make the rulers seem more real, the author added humorous facts about various sovereigns. One example: Which queen was so fat she needed a hoist to get on the throne? (Answer: Queen Anne Stuart. The king that needed the same help was none other than King Henry VIII, in his later years.)
Lately, I've been reading a great deal about British rulers and I wanted to see if I understood more about them after all that reading. This is a quick overview of the sovereigns (important and not-so-important). Green has done a good job presenting the English kings and queens and giving readers enough info without a lot of stuffy details.
The British monarchy has undergone incredible changes. They are now a constitutional monarchy; the way they got to that designation is a fascinating story. I thoroughly enjoyed this less-than-3-hour review.
