I had a book requested from me, and this was part of that member's RC. It was tacked on to one of the normal requestor conditions.

Due to rising mailing costs, I can only accept requests for 2 or more books to be shipped at one time. Thanks.

I also have a RC, and once my request is accepted I review that member's bookshelf to see if another book might interest me.  But while I synpathize with that member's delimma, I didn't realize you could "require" this. Or is that not true?

I'm not sure how that RC is helpful as requestor conditions go to the books you are requesting not sending.

But no, you cannot require more than one book be ordered from your bookshelf.

You likely need to make the Team aware that this member is confused about how the site operates and the terms the member agreed to when posting those books.

It happened again. I requested a book from a member and here is a reply he sent,

"This is a really heavy book, and the postage for just this one book is beyond worthwhile. If there are no other items you would like from PBS/SACD/SADVD, would you please cancel so the option can pass to the next person."

At least he says "please."  When I request a book, because I have an RC, I wait until it is accepted before reviewing that member's bookshelf for others I might want, as a know it helps reduce the cost of credits. But it is annoying when I get a request like this.

Recently, a member requested a book from me ---see first post above---but also sent  a message to me about it, which included a statement stating if I ordered books from him to order are least two. But while he ordered a small paperback---which I sent him---I noticed he didn't bother to order a second one from my bookshelf.  What gall!

But while I'm posting here, I want to send a big THANK YOU to all those members who send me heavy books even when they have to pay $5.38 or more for postage.  In return, I do the sme for them and others.

UPDATE on my "heavy book" post just above. I reported this to PBS last night. This morning I received a reply stating they were sorry this happened to me and would "explain" to the member that he couldn't require this.

I found the RC's coming from both directions in the last year have been very interesting and it goes on deaf ear to 'explain' that PBS doesn't allow such things. It's very dissappointing after so many years of friendly interaction with members who were more than happy to send & recieve.

PBS could address the shipping cost vs credit cost by either charging more for credits or setting a credit cost based on the weight of the book.  The precedent exists.  They already charge 2 credits for audio books, excluding cassettes.

One thing we can know for sure, shipping costs won't be going down.

Glad you reported the member, as that member agreed to ship the one book when it was posted.

I have also received this message when I have requested one book from another PBS member.  Another thing that happens if I order one book from a person's bookshelf is they cancel the request saying the books is no longer available.
I would like to thank all of the members that continue to send one book if that is all that is requested.  I know that it is more expensive, but it is reciprocal.

I'm waiting for sender to complete accepting my order after PMing me to say 'I'm going to wait a couple days so you can look through my bookshelf to see if you want something else'.  I did immediately look but they had mostly NF on their shelf and a lot looked like medical books so a very specific offering. I let her know there were no more I wanted.
Now radio silence....no acceptance. If I get refused I will report the member.

Update on my 05/12 post - Just sent this to the PBS crew.

A week or so ago I sent you notice of [nickname] --- see his PM on my messages page---- who accepted a hardback but told me I had to request another book to make it "worthwhile" for him to pay the postage cost. And if I didn't, then to cancel and let another person request the book.

The way he solved that problem was---although he had accepted my request---he never shipped it out.  So the system eventually canceled the request.

Now I don't care about the book, and want nothing to do with this person. But you might keep an eye on him as him as he'll probably do this to others.

The way to handle this is report the problems you have. If a member constsantly does this, he or she doesn't belong here.

My questionable sender finally marked my book as 'mailed' yesterday.

Jeff: "PBS could address the shipping cost vs credit cost by either charging more for credits or setting a credit cost based on the weight of the book."

I disagree with this. The person posting the book knows how heavy it is and that it will cost more at the post office; it's their choice to mail it out. No one is forcing them to send out a heavy book. A person could choose to only post small paperbacks to mail out but request heavy hardcovers in return. They would technically get more bang for their buck and they're allowed to do that.

My twenty-six cents I'll throw in here; the normal for me the last 3-4 years is what happened with the last book I shipped. routine is; someone requests, I wrap and ship within 12hours of getting the request (no I don't ask them if they want others, I assume they check out my list if they so choose) and I use Pirateship for postage (save time/$s that way instead of here or at USPS counter) and mark mailed then I send a message with the tracking # to let them know I've shipped it and they can track it on their end. I've done it this way for over 10 yrs now.

as it has happened the last 5 books I've shipped, the message sent goes 'unread' and no message upon arrival is sent with the book being checked in. all okay with me, too. Every other book I send a reminder but that too usually goes unanswered or unopened on their end. that is all okay with me too.

I joined PBS to trade books. that simple. I pay for membership (like any other membership, it's my choice) and I follow the rules and hope for the best in the last 6 years or so as the members have also changed their idea of rules here. I stick around more for the friendships I've made here while accepting that I only get a few books coming or going since 2020. Like any membership for a club I pay for, I'm a member because I hope to forge friendships along the way. I accept the rules and with hope that all members will/would do the same.

We've lost many great friends here in the last 6 years and they are greatly missed. my humble opinion being a member for so very long with my memories of joining and swapping in the thousands over all that time, it's changed to the friends here, for why I stay. off my soap box now.
