I was reading a little of this and that today, since I couldn't get on here, and ended up at the Wikipedia article on avocados, where I learned that they are toxic to many animals, including house pets.  So, no more sprouted avocado pits at floor level around here - my cat bites everything!

Birds also seem to be particularly sensitive to this toxic compound.
