That's one of the most misleading blurbs in history. This book isn't a romance, it's a coming of age story. Cordelia is sent to the country because she hasn't quite recovered her health after having the flu or something that winter, and she meets two people who are having a Byronesque love affair, and a mysterious woman with a past. Cordelia's life task is to discover the how and why of the situation and thereby learn about life and other people. She does meet the man she will eventually marry, but the story isn't about that romance, it's about Cordelia's growth in life experience. It's a good novel but it's not a romance. The publisher probably didn't know what else to do with it, so they stuffed it into their romance line, where it doesn't really belong.
