If you've already read The Two Dukes of Wyndham, then you can bypass almost the whole of Mr. Cavendish and pick up with the last two chapters. This book rehashes the entire prequel and tries to develop the relationship between Thomas and Amelia that just doesn't work. The final proposal scene was romantic and lovely but hardly enough to make their love for each other close to believable. What I really wanted to to know is what happened to the Dowager Duchess. 2.5 stars out of 5.

Poor Thomas Cavendish! He comes home to discover that his title of Duke may NOT be his.
This book as better than Jack's story. I actually cared about the leads. Thomas had his faults and at times didn't know how to handle them. His childhood was less than loving. His grandmother never held back her disdain.
Amelia Willoughby was betrothed to Thomas since birth and just bided her time until Thomas came to collect her. Still after twenty years, she's still waiting. Thomas doesn't see the rush, he'll get around to it eventually. Amelia was tired of waiting.
There was parts of this book, that didn't like. I really didn't like Thomas teasing Amelia near the beginning. He basically ignored the girl until it suits him and really didn't give thought to her feeling. Then Amelia all but melted to becomes a doormat slightly. But as time went on, I liked their rapport because unlike Jack and Grace, theirs was more emotional.

I am a great admirer of Julia Quinn's books, but this one fell way short. It is not because of great expectations and tepid writing. The book is well written, only it is The Lost Duke written from a Amelia and Thomas' point of view. You go through the entire book thinking, ok now the story is going to begin, but the reader ends up reading entire passages that are exact replicas from the previous book. Even this would not bother me if the story actually reflected Amelia and Thomas' story, but it was like reading a different POV of Grace and Jack's story. The lead characters never connected, and Amelia was a nice, boring person. She kept saying she was a smart person, but the character never reflected that quality. Amelia did not reflect a one outstanding quality that would make Thomas think, this is why I love her. Thomas himself showed no qualities that would make the reader think he was a man to love. You get the last chapter that is devoted to Thomas and Amelia only and I would say that fizzled out, but it actually never warmed up.

I love Julia Quinn; I've read all her books; I love her 'Bridgerton' series. Unfortunately, this book just left me blah. The main characters in this book are the secondary characters from "The Lost Duke of Wyndham", and so is the story. Even if you read it immediately after 'The Lost Duke', you find it wanting. The characters were not engaging or interesting, and the whole story felt like it was just tying up loose ends from 'The Lost Duke'.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this book after reading the reviews, but I will always read anything that Julia Q. puts out. I liked it better than the first one, yes, I know what was going to happen but it didn't get in the way for me. I liked how Amelia reacted to everything that was happening around her, she made the story for me. It was great to see what was going on in Thomas's head and how he made his life on the estate.

I love Julia Quinn but found this book not quite up to par for her. I liked seeing the story from the point of view from other characters but it didn't feel new to me. I wanted more story between the two main characters. But still it's Julia Quinn and I haven't hated a book of hers yet.
A previous reviewer faulted the author for repeating some of The Lost Duke Of Wyndham's scenes, as if 'wearing someone else's glasses'. I found this to be one of the perks of this book. It was extremely interesting to me to view an exact scene being someone else. I imagine it was quite a challenge to Ms. Quinn, but I feel she accomplished this feat wonderfully. I enjoyed this book almost as well as its predecessor. Great job. I will continue to buy everything Julia Quinn writes.

This was a good read, however if you read the book before this one, you will know exactly what is going to happen. She tells the exact same store just from different characters points of view. It was a very good store the first time I read about the new Duke and it was a good read learning about the current Duke.

I enjoyed reading the story from a different point of view. It was fun to find out what was going on with the other characters of the book. At times it felt I was reading the book I just finished last week, but not so much that it was intolerable. The fun thing, one book doesn't have to be read before the other and you do get a nice ending.

I couldn't wait to read this story after The Lost Duke of Wyndham. However, most of the book was The Lost Duke of Wyndham, but from Thomas's & Amelia's perspectives, so I felt I was re-reading, as well as confused - it was like trying on someone else's glasses - painful. The very end of the book is where this story was best. I wish Ms. Quinn had found a way to tell this couple's story without re-hashing so much of the Lost Duke one.

This is the same story as told in "The Lost Duke of Wyndham." Even if there are a few different twists, I felt like I was rereading an old book and was cheated. Too bad, becuase I like most Julia Quinn books.

Great book. The second in the series. Although i liked the first a lot more, this book was still fun to read. The story line was obvious (from the first book), but the insight gained from the second perspective was interesting and enjoyable. A definate recommendation. Julia Quinn is always fabulous.

Grade B-
The neat thing about Mr. Cavendish, I Presume is that it tells the same story as The Lost Duke of Wyndham but from a different perspective. The first book, TLDOF told the story from Jack Audley's and Grace Eversleigh's points of view. Now MCIP is told from Thomas Cavendish's and Amelia Willoughby's points of view. Thomas may or may not be the Duke of Wyndham since Jack Audley is his cousin of whom no one knew existed. Thomas will travel with an entourage of people to discover if indeed Jack's parent's marriage is legitimate and if so then Thomas will no longer be the Duke. To make matters even more complicated Thomas has been engaged to Lady Amelia Willoughby since they were young children. Thomas has put off his responsibility in marrying her and now that he finds she may not be his intended he discovers that he is more bothered by that fact than actually losing his title.
What I liked. Julia Quinn does a very good job of showing instead of telling the story. There are a lot of really great scenes between Amelia and Thomas where they are open and frank with each other. I liked that Amelia has a backbone where Thomas is concerned and decides she is tired of waiting around for him. Her impulsive nature is good for Thomas because he is too serious and stuffy most of the time. I thought it was interesting that Ms. Quinn decided to write the same story but using different perspectives. It was neat to see the same scene being played out but getting a different view of it.
What I didn't like. I had some issues with Thomas. I hated that he kept Amelia waiting and took her for granted. His indifference was hurting Amelia and because he was so self absorbed it took him a while to see that. It also took Thomas a painfully long time to realize that if he wants Amelia then he needs to go after her and win her affection. Basically, Thomas was such a Nob! The good thing is that at least Thomas grows throughout the story.

A companion to The Lost Duke of Wyndham, this book tells the opposing story of the current Duke of Wyndham and his journey to discovering his true identity and the loss of everything he has known.
The story of Thomas Cavendish is compelling and a rather uniquely told perspective as most regency romances are more from the feminine point of view. While the story does bounce back and forth between perspectives, the primary POV is that of Thomas and we are privy to his deep internal feelings and thoughts in this difficult journey.
The romance is sweet, a couple who has been betrothed since childhood - finally learning each other and falling in love. However, we spent most of the book with Thomas and his troubles, the romance felt more like a side story.
Julia Quinn is an OK writer but she has a tendency to use language or phrases that aren't appropriate for the time or place. For example, the heroine repeatedly refers to "the Big Dipper". That name for that constellation is completely American and only came into use in the 19th century, so it wouldn't make sense for a regency England lady to call it that. It's a trivial detail, but something that is troublesome in its obvious error.
Sensuality was very limited with one short love scene at the very end of the book.

The first book, The Lost Duke of Wyndham, is excellent. This sequel, whose story runs at the same time as Wyndham, is a bit of a disappointment. Instead of running parallel to the first book and giving the reader a brand new perspective, Ms. Quinn instead uses the first book as an outline for this one, simply filling in a few story holes here and there to keep the reader tantalized.
Entire sections of dialogue are painstakingly repeated word for word, as though the author was desperately trying to prove these storylines occurred at the same time. Instead of giving the reader a unique perspective, it is simply tedious.
It's nice to find out what happens to Thomas Cavendish, and the long-suffering Amelia -- so you will read it, of course. Just don't expect to be enthralled. Not a page-turner by any means.

I was glad to see that the other reviews reflect my feelings of disappointment. I kind of feel a little cheated because I really wanted know Thomas and Amelia story. Not a regurgatation of her last book. I skipped major sections because they were a repeat of her last book - word for wrod. Very little new things were written about the couple throughout this book. I think Ms. Quinn had to refer to the previous book for story line purposes, but she should have summed up those parts instead of just copied them over again or both stories should have been combined into 1 book. It would have made more sense and not disappointed so many readers.

If you read the first book in the series "Lost Duke of Wyndham", you can skip this book. Most of the book is a retelling of the first book from a different point of view. And, much of the book's dialog is word for word from the first book. She must have taken a week to write this book since much of it was cut and paste from the first book.

I was very disappointed in this book. If you've read The Lost Duke of Wyndham, don't bother reading this one. It could have been very interesting, a short back story of why he's no longer the Duke, then how he what happens to him, how his circumstances change, his courtship and marriage. But instead the author chose to rework The Lost Duke. Ninety percent of this book comes straight from the other one. It begins at the same time, goes through all discovery of the lost heir and the confirmation of his legitimacy, with tiny bits of extra thrown in about what Thomas is thinking or doing. It ends almost at the same time, just fifteen pages that do nothing but show him proposing to Amelia and a short bit about another title. I felt like I was cheated out of a good story, and the price of the book!

From the back cover...
There went the bride...
Amelia Willoughby has been engaged to the Duke of Wyndham for as long as she can remember. Literally. A mere six months old when the contracts were signed, she has spent the rest of her life waiting. And waiting. And waiting...for Thomas Cavendish, the oh-so-lofty duke, to finally get around to marrying her. But as she watches him from afar, she has a sneaking suspicion that he never thinks about her at all...
It;s true. He doesn't. Thomas rather likes having a fiancee'-all the better to keep the husband-hunters at bay-and he does intend to marry her...eventually. But just when he begins to realize that his bride might be something more than convenient, Thomas's world is rocked by the arrival of his long-lost cousin, who may or may not be the true Duke of Wyndham. And if Thomas is not the duke, then he's not engaged to Amelia. Which is the cruelest joke of all, because this arrogant and illustrious duke has made the mistake of falling in love...with his own fiancee'!

Normally I am a huge Julia Quinn fan, however this book had a hard time holding my interest because it overlapped too much of the Lost Duke of Wyndham. It wasn't that Amelia & Thomas's scenes together were bad, just not enough of the two of them in some ways. I am, evidently, of the opposite opinion of most reviewers. I LOVED the concept by Ms. Quinn of telling the same story from two different view points. When reading a book that focuses on the two main characters and to then have other characters exit the scene, I usually wonder just what they are up to. With this book you KNOW what Thomas and Amelia were doing while Jack was pursuing Grace. The two books together are just one story with all the gaps filled in. Granted there is repitition from the previous book but don't you ever go back and reread parts of books you have already read? This book save you the trouble.
