GREASE AN 8-INCH SQUARE BAKING PAN OR A CAST -IRON SKILLET. SIFT FLOUR WITH THE SUGAR, BAKING POWDER, AND SALT INTO A LARGE BOWL. STIR IN CORNMEAL AND ADD EGGS,MILK, AND SHORTENING, USING A MIXER BEAT JUST TILL SMOOTH, DO NOT OVER BEAT. POUR INTO THE PREPARED PAN. BAKE FOR 12-15 MINS. AND SERVE HOT.
