This is a very unusual Western, but I enjoyed it. Not much tension, in fact a reviewer over on Amazon compared it in one way to a cozy. So maybe it is a cozy Western. One which is filled with all kinds of Western characters.
The main character is a fifty-some-year-old sheriff of a small Montana town who hasn't had a serious case in years. Then suddenly he has a spate of various crimes, including two murders and one attempted homicide. So he has to run around trying to find clues to solve them all, which often has him riding in his early-20th century flivver. The fact that the town is somewhat isolated makes it even more fun. Especially when his deputy has to take the railroad, then a stage and then a wagon to question a suspect in another town.
Basically, I enjoy anything Bill Pronzini writes.
