I enjoy reading good nautical fiction from the age of sail. And have read many series based on numerous characters. While this isn't the best I've read, it is still worth while reading. I do think the author spends too much time describing how the sails are rigged, and used to maneuver the ship. But I guess he's probably a sailor himself and that's his interest.

Meanwhile, he tells a good story. And based on what I've read elsewhere, the behavior of his characters and situations are authentic, especially when he describes the daily life of the crew.
