When Minerva "Minnie" Benning escaped civil war-ravaged Vistaria, she left behind everything including the man she loved, Durando Pena. He had been shot while rescuing her from imminent capture by the Insurrectos, and her last sight of him was soldiers racing his lifeless body into the Presidential Palace infirmary. Everyone told her he had to be dead. Safe at last and relocated to the Acapulco estate of the assassinated president's brother, Nicholas Escobedo, she tries futilely to get anyone to help her return to Vistaria to find her Duardo. She finally finds the help she needs onboard the boat she is trying to steal to sail to Vistaria when she foils the gang-rape of Carmen, the daughter of the deceased president.
Up until this point, she and Carmen had hated each other, even having a very public catfight in the kitchen of the estate mansion. Together they sail their way back to Visteria where they sneak into the Presidential Palace now in the paranoid hands of the leader of the Insurrectos, General Serrano, and his evil Chief of Intelligence, Colonel Zalaya. Quickly discovered, Minnie is captured, and Carmen is able to escape undetected to the attic. While Carmen, tries to figure out how best to help, Minnie is turned over to the feared Colonel Zalaya who looks like he could be Duardo's twin or even Duardo himself.
This is the 2nd book in the Visteria Has Fallen series by Tracy Cooper-Posey, and since it picks up immediately where book 1 ended it is not a standalone novel. You really need to have read the first in the series to understand what is going on. Once again, the story grabbed me from the very beginning and I wanted to read until I just couldn't any longer. Work got in the way. And here we were at the holidays, too. Darn holidays! It was suspenseful. It continued the story of characters from book 1 in the background while focusing on Minnie and Duardo's story here. It was fun.
This book is recommended for contemporary romance readers that like a thrilling, suspenseful story. Also, the author has peppered the book with interesting little nuggets of information apparently gleaned from her research. Very nice.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader copy of this book.
