I first read this book when I was around six or seven and absolutely fell in love with the world presented in the story. Ratha is a strong, female character, which was something of a rarity at the time. The descriptions are sparse but vividly realized- it took me years to realize the characters were felines (I though they were wolves), but I could picture the fire consuming the forest and the heard beasts running in fear. The society of the Named and the unNamed is well written, with both sides having flaws.
