I was very impressed with this book. If I didn't know that Parker passed away recently, I'd swear it was written by him. Atkins brings the same characters, the same humor, the same suspense as did Parker.
I hope he writes some more because I'll never get tired of reading Spenser books.
As a long time fan of Robert B. Parker and Spenser, I was nervous when I heard that another writer was going to take up the mantle and continue writing the character. I was pleasantly surprised, but not blown away, by Lullaby. Ace Atkins does a decent job of capturing the nuances of Spenser, with the witty dialogue, descriptive prose, love of food and drink and, of course, the well developed sense of justice.
There were times when it seemed that the banter was a bit forced, while with Parker it seemed as natural as water flowing, but that did not detract from the overall effort, which was good. I'll be back for more of Spenser and Ace Atkins.
Not quite as well-written as Parker, but, after a few chapters, I really got into the story and enjoyed my reunion with Hawk, Susan, Pearl the wonder dog, and all the Boston venues and characters.
