Happy 1sy day of September!

I, for one, am absolutely stoked "summer" is over.  I love the 'ber" months!

I finished reading Imperium by Robert Harris.  I liked it at first, and then it kind of dragged, to the point that I skimmed the last 75 pages.  That said, I started Conclave by the same author.  I like this much better, but we shall see.  Apparently it is being made into a tv show???

I have finished The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club by  Helen Simonson   Very good set in 1919 England.

I finished The Highgate Cemetery Murder [Tate and Bell, Bk 1] by Irina Shapiro very good first book in the series. HF mystery set in 1856 England. Ms. Shapiro does a very good job developing characters and plot. I look forward to book 2.

I finished Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon. A wonderful book set in 1853 about a family who joins a wagon train crossing the Oregon Trail. I really enjoyed this book and my tears at the end were almost cathartic as I thought about those pioneer families, and all they endured, and also the Native American people who wanted to be able to preserve their own ways of living. Five star read for me.

Now I am reading Mockingbird Summer by Lynda Rutledge. It is classified as YA, set in 1964 in a small town in Texas. Our main character is Corky Corcoran, a 13-year tomboy on the cusp of all things new and different. I am enjoying it so far. Lots of issues to explore in a book set in America in 1964 - racial prejudices, segregation, the 'appropriateness' of women working outside the home, girls who must play only the 'safe' sports such as tennis, etc.

Read Simon, the Fiddler by Paulette Jiles. nice romantic historical fiction.  Quite good.  Also enjoyed News of the World.

Since DH has finished his chemo treatments I may have more time to read.  We'll see.  It will be nice to have a near normal life.  It will take about six weeks before his red blood cells return to normal and he can start building muscle. 

Finished Heart of the Nile and I liked it.  Read a historical about air crews who flew B24s in WWII, Wild Blue.  Very interesting.  And, I am tryihng to work on the yard and gardens as we move closer to fall.  Made a batch of salsa with tomateos and jam with raspberries.

I finished an excellent book The Women by Kristen Hannah.   I gave it 5 stars it is about women nurses in Vietnam during the war, and how they were treated when they returned home. I highly recommend

Hello!  Carolyn, I too am happy fall is bearing down upon us.  However, summer doesn't want to let go here in MN.  It's been hot and humid for a couple of weeks.  

I recently finished listening to The Fox Wife by Yangsze Choo. It was pretty good.  Very charming and I loved listening to the narrator (who was the author) but the story didn't grab me as much as I would've thought it would.  I also finished reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver and oddly, I didn't love it. I know it is considered a very good book, and I certainly had no qualms with the writing.  I guess I just couldn't really get into it for some reason.  I persevered because I didn't hate it, but I was kind of glad to be done with it. 

My current listen is The Girls With No Names, Serena Burdick, which so far I'm kind of "eh" on, although I'm only a little over an hour in.  I started reading The Life Boat by Charlotte Rogan last night, and that seems promising. 

REK - I'm glad your DH has finished his chemo, and I pray it was a success! 

Kelly - I read that Amy Harmon book last year, I think.  Indeed, being a pioneer must have been an interesting experience!

Hello, and Happy Friday!  I bailed on listening to The Girls With No Names.  Three hours in, and I just didn't care enough to keep going.  This morning on my way to work I started listening to I Am Half-Sick of Shadows (Flavia DeLuce Book 4), by Alan Bradley.  I haven't read a Flavia book in years and years, and I thought it would be fun to return to her.  I have books 4-6 in my Audible llibrary.  I may make a goal to get through those yet this year. I finished reading The Life Boat last night, and I liked it.  Hard for a book not to be interesting when it involves a group of people stuck in a life boat on the ocean for weeks.  LOL! 

I started The Miller's Dance by Winston Graham, #9 in the Poldark series.
