What was it really like for these early explorers as they discovered other lands? Did they actually fall in love with the women of these unknown cultures? We can only guess at the details. However, the author writes with an additional edge of authenticity since it's a family romance; her ancestors Maile (a chief's daughter) and John Harbottle (navigator to James Cook). This story is more than enjoyable; it's an illuminating primer of early Hawaiian tribal life and their intimate knowledge of and appreciation for the land, the water, and the sky that sustains them. Told mainly from Maile's perspective, John's voice is also present through his private journal entries. Both had their own anger and grief to overcome, and seeing that transform into mutual respect and admiration was a heart-melting and tender experience. Absolutely wonderful! 4.5 stars
