Taking Away - Starting Mathematics Author:Karen Bryant-Mole "Starting Maths" is a series which provides an introduction to infant maths topics. The concepts dealt with in each book follow the guidelines of the British Curriculum. "Taking Away" introduces one of the fundamental number operations in mathematics - subtraction. It begins by explaining the idea of taking away one number from another, and goes... more » on to give examples to show the children the importance and use of subtraction in our everyday lives. The book encourages readers to take part in a variety of activities that help to give a greater understanding of the topic. The book starts by explaining what taking away is and asking the reader to carry out some simple subtractions where the numbers involved are 10 or less. It shows why numbers are subtracted and how basic sums are written out. Slightly more difficult subtraction problems are then introduced, with numbers up to 20. Activities such as working out the age difference between the members of child's class or group, playing hide and seek, and writing a "taking away story" make the subject fun to study.
