It is then the fact that it is explained in Scripture, which makes it present a real and unconquerable embarrassment. For the remark which follows to the effect that the symbol took its form in Pharaoh's mind from Egyptian scenes is of no weight, It is no matter where a symbol came from, so that it is a symbol. Other symbols might be traced to other nations. The local appropriateness of symbols is beautifully shown by Elliott, Vol. i.—392—404. Pharaoh's lean kine swallows Mr. Lord's seven laws as well as the seven fat kine."
