The second book in the "Green Knowe" series centers on a 17th century family. The main character, Susan, is blind at a time when nothing was done to educate or accommodate the handicapped. However, her sea-captain father buys her a young African slave to be her companion, and Jacob, without European prejudices about girls or disabilities, teaches her to be independent, even to climbing trees.
Meanwhile, in modern times, Tolly, hearing his grandmother's stories about the family and encountering their spirits in the old house, finds the jewels stolen from Susan's mother, enabling the old house to remain in the family. A very satisfactory read for young people.
