Due to a dire need for doctors, medical students are allowed to help out in WWI. The main character of this novel is sent to help out at a remote hospital. When he arrives, he discovers the main, and only, Doctor is gone, and he is supposedly in charge. An experienced nurse helps him manage the hospital and learn how to perform various operations and amputations.

In a nutshell: Dr. Zhivago meets The English Patient.
