It is a fact full of significance that last year the organized profession in Germany issued a circular warning the youth against the medical career. It pointed out the overcrowding of the profession in comparison to the population, and depicted the resulting material depression prevailing in its ranks. This act is significant when we note that Germany has one physician for every one thousand, nine hundred and forty-nine inhabitants, while in our own country there is one doctor for every three hundred and fifty people. Why is the profession so full? The reasons are many. Chief among these is the failure on the part of medical schools to insist upon a high standard of entrance requirement.
