Natalie M. (HBNole)'s Bulletin Board Entries

HBNole
Natalie M. (HBNole): RequirementsOkay, I can understand how some people might not want certain books because they are allergic to smoke or pets. I totally respect this. (I, for one, however, am not above airing out a smoky book if it's free.)

However, recently I've gotten some requestors with requirements lists so long that I feel these people should just go buy new books. I mean, really, people, you're getting the book for FREE!!! How can you be that picky?? And if you're a "collector" you should definitely be buying books instead of swapping them.

So, instead of risking getting zero credits for mailing you a book that I could read perfectly well, in good (but not mint) condition, I won't be mailing you that book at all. I feel this is especially true for some of the books I post that are in great demand. I'm sorry, but if you really want "Life of Pi," you'll take the very excellent book I have -- and if your requirements list is too intimidating, you won't get the book at all.

That's my rant for the day.

Ha ha, amen to all that! If you really want the book that bad, why does someone care if it's an ex-library copy or whatever... and if it is a gift for someone, spend more than $1.59!!

Your comment made me smile! I don't care if a book has a stray coffee-circle stain or whatever... it just makes me feel more connected to the people who have enjoyed it before. All things will pass away anyway, right?

Hurrah to both these posts/comments. I received a book from another swap group (but they, in turn, told me about PBS) and I was cautioned that a corner of the book had been lightly chewed by a cat. This only made me want the book more! After reading/using the book (it was about Tarot) I posted it here, and when it was requested, I had to admit that my OWN cat had added his little teeth marks. The person requesting the book has cats and she shared my own attitude for the personal touches of this book.

In another book swap, here on PBS, I receiveda book with some writing in it, that writing being the author's signiture/autograph and the book was Jehan Sadat's memoirs, former first lady of Egypt!!!!! And I actually enjoy any notes or highlights people have made in the books I end up with. It almost always sheds new light on whatever I am reading.

Ha! I sent a book I bought in England ... that's only published in England and I got a zero credit because the book got a little squished in my luggage. Huh. Send it back then and I'll give you your credit back! Or possible, go to England yourself and buy it :) It's gorgeous there and the sandwiches are usually worth eating.

Lynn M. (officerripley): Couldn't agree with you more, Natalie; as long as I can still read it, a book with a little "character" like coffee cup rings or some pet chew marks doesn't bother me either. I don't even mind smoke smell--it bothers my husband but I just keep the book in a plastic "zipper" bag when I'm not reading it and he's fine.

Natalie M. (HBNole): What's the notebook for?Is this like a blog? Or is this to remind yourself of stuff you'd like to post or read? Who gets to see this -- everyone or just me?

I put 7 books in the mail today, after joining just last night. The other 3 I listed last night have been requested also but I haven't wrapped them yet. Looks like Terry Pratchett is popular! :-)

Looking forward to getting more credits. I found a lot of Anne Perry books I'd like to order. Probably look for Laura Joh Rowland as well.
