Abraham's Other Son: Islam Among Judaism & Christianity (Question and Answer Format)
Review Date: 1/10/2020
Helpful Score: 1

The controversial topic of the ever-turbulent Middle East is incessantly bombarding us in the media, and will remain so till the end. The sheer Muslim population on our planet, its globally strategic position, its complex politics, its vast resources, and especially its desperate need for the gospel--all make this crucial subject impossible to ignore. Islam boasts of approximately a fifth of the world population, its regions control most of the world's oil reserves, and it is the fastest growing religion in the world and in the United States.

In his book, Abraham's Other Son: Islam Among Judaism and Christianity, the author Dr. Philip G. Samaan deals with the enduring legacy of Abraham, and tries to disentangle the misconceptions among the three monotheistic religions, stemming from their ancestral father Abraham. Understanding Islam will be highlighted more than Judaism and Christianity, simply because we are more familiar with the other two. Islam is still shrouded in enigma, veiled in ambiguities, and a greater effort should be exerted in clarifying its beliefs and practices, as compared and contrasted with those of Judaism and Christianity.

It is hoped that the Question-and-Answer format, along with the selected glossary at the end, will help make the material easier to understand and assimilate. Hundreds of questions that seem puzzling and confusing will be answered with clarity and objectivity. May this book break new ground in dispelling many misunderstandings about the descendants of the other son of Abraham, and in drawing them to accept Jesus, the true Seed of Abraham. Let us hope that common ground of understanding will replace battlegrounds of misunderstanding as we embark on the exciting journey of earnestly seeking the loving, just and powerful God of our father Abraham. May this homeward journey help to prepare us and all of God's children to meet Jesus when He comes.

Satterthwait grips his readers early, hard and fast as New Mexico PI Joshua Croft (seen before in The Hanged Man) pursues the man who shot his partner and lover, Rita Mondragon. Hours before the shooting, Ernie Martinez had escaped the nearby state penitentiary, where he was serving time for previously shooting Rita and killing her husband years ago, while trying to murder Joshua. Infuriated that police did not warn them, Joshua gives chase on his own while Rita lies comatose in a Santa Fe hospital. The trail is grim. An informant who once turned in Martinez has been shot to death. A troubled bank teller has suddenly abandoned her home to help Martinez and a fellow escapee. Joshua's hasty reaction triggers deadly consequences in Denver, enraging the cops, but a computer nerd there points him toward another lead in Texas. Disbelieving reports that the fleeing felons have died in a fiery road accident near New Orleans, Joshua presses on to south Florida and a bloody showdown. Satterthwait cross-cuts smoothly from present to past, delving in depth into Joshua and Rita's relationship and the origins of the feud with Martinez. Narration and dialogue crackle with smart humor. Joshua gets strong support, especially from a monosyllabic ex-CIA agent who collects Barbie dolls and prowls the Everglades like an alligator, silent and dangerous.

Beautiful gift book. A teacher, a plumber, an entrepreneur, a preachers kid, a drifter, a thief. Six men in a dinghy, lost in the vast Pacific, their food rapidly rotting in the heat. Why, they wondered, could they do nothing right? Why did the planes overhead never see them? Why could they catch no fish?

One day one of them said, "I think the problem is not what we've done or not done, but what we are. God wants us to be different. This might mean changing our hearts."

Tomorrow they would make things right.

Against all odds, by their ingenuity, determination and faith, they survived two full months under the equatorial sun with almost no clothing or fresh water. Five of them would live to see their homeland, healed by their suffering.

This is a story about never, ever giving up.

It is hoped that this new edition may be a means of helping today's generation of Seventh-day Adventists know how God has led in the past, and thus be inspired to carry forward to completion the work so nobly begun by the pioneers.

This is an exciting book about the Seven Day Day Adventist church in California. In about 1868 the church has members move to California and many converts are made. So Church members asked for Pastors to come. They find the climate warm and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. This is not only about the development of the church but the history of early California. Many of the later niceties of the state are not present in the beginning but develop later.

Who wants to be a seal? Phokey does! This feisty sea otter led scientists a merry chase up and down the coast of California. If your children enjoy nature as mine do and like to root for the underdog (under-otter?), they will read or ask to hear this true adventure tale over and over. Both my childlren & I like the educational "Fun Facts" about otters at the end of the story and the beautiful illustrations and photos. The real sounds of otters and seal life enhance the telling if you are lucky enough to have the tape as well.

This is a fun and beautiful learning gift book.

This is an excellent book is about a 22 year Student who goes to Africa, the Country of Chad. The people are literally dirt poor and being an enthusiastic soul she lives with them volunteers for 6 months as a nurse, although she is not. It is a dirty, germy, infectious life. She lives with a family of 19 people and lives just like they do. The "Chad" Family adopts her .She has a "Chad" mom and dad and siblings. Even though they eat mostly rice, she is happy and drinks from the Communal cup and backet and gets infected with blood at the hospital. An Older person would be freaked out but she flows with the tide and either takes a daily bucket bath or washes with a bar of soap given to her by her "American mother" In the river. Her African family takes their relationship with her seriously and are so gentle and kind. They are wonderful parents to her. The African people are very happy even though they do not have much " there is room for one more". I think that the more material good people have the more unhappy they become. I believe that this is a "Chad" run government hospital.

LaVerne and Alma Tucker travel all over the world as missionaries for Jesus. They sleep in mud huts in Africa. When they fly to missions they fly low to see the great African elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras and wildebeest. They asked at a mission if mothers wanted to dedicate their babies to God. They asked before dedication please remove and hand us the witchdoctors strings placed on the babies, over 100 babies witchdoctor strings were handed to the missionaries. While this seems strange perhaps to Americans today in 2016 many Africans still practice witchcraft with the witch doctors. The photos in this book are wonderful with the US missionaries holding the precious African babies and people for baptism.

The Tuckers move on to Thailand. Most Thai's are Buddhist, Hindu and Animist.Their families are enraged when they become Christians and often beat their teen or young adult children. Freedom of religion as we know it does not exist in much of the world.

"Again, Josefina" is the second book published in the series of Josefina short stories. The setting of the story takes place shortly after the book "Josefina Learns a Lesson". Josefina is fascinated with Tia Dolores's piano and the wonderful music that Tia Dolores can make with it. Tia Dolores is willing to teach Josefina how to play, but Papa wonders if Josefina will be able to manage it with her chores and school lessons. Josefina persuades him to let her learn how to play the piano, but is quickly a disenchanted learner when she realizes that she must start from the beginning and practice more then she has time to do. When Josefina feels that she is not making progress, she asks Papa if she can quit. Instead of allowing her to quit, Josefina is challenged to find a way to practice. She is a clever child, and she finds a way to practice even when she is not sitting at the piano. Then, she finds her joy in playing the piano and acceptance for herself as a learner when her toddler nephew happily "dances" to her imperfect piano playing. This short story is an excellent tale of the frustration of learning something new, and the value of doing something for pleasure instead of perfection.

It is really a straight forward old fashioned, chronological biography of an extraordinarily complicated life. It is hard to imagine how many cover stories and aliases the author had to blow up to get this story told.

Sonya (her code name) was born Ursula Kuczinsky, a German Jew who quickly aligned herself with the Russian Communists as a way to fight fascism. That decision took her to Shanghai, Mukden, Moscow and during WWII to England. She continued to spy for the Soviet Union after the war, all while raising two children as a mostly single mother.

Oddly, male chauvinism opened some doors for her. Almost no one could get their heads around the idea of a woman being a threat. Her first husband was caught using forged passports of the same quality as hers, which were accepted. And when MI5 finally caught onto her, the investigation was sparked by the only woman in the department.

Certainly she was committed to the cause, and risked everything to fight fascism. But I have a hard time believing her protestations that she had no knowledge of the Stalinist purges during the 30s. That sounds like, well an agent's cover story. The book does detail the crisis of confidence that occurred in her circle when Communist Russia and Nazi Germany signed a non aggression pact at the beginning of WWII.

Really a page turning thriller. Highly recommended, as is all of MacIntyre's work.
