A fascinating, thought provoking book for parents, teachers, anyone who works with children in a learning setting. John Holt was an innovative educator who records his observations on how children actually learn and how we can help or hinder this process.

This was a thorough treatise on a singular event, the poisoning of a very well-known jurist (one knowledgeable about law--Wythe was a judge and law professor who mentored Jefferson) by his nephew. I was interested in the story after touring Wythe's house in Williamsburg. While it really gave me more information than I ever wanted, from the reputations of the defending attorney's to the state of gambling in the Virginia to the situation of blacks in Richmond, much of this information was new and fascinating--I never knew that George Washington was an addicted gambler--they don't tell you that in history books!

Well-written, interesting format for a mystery, written as a piece of investigative journalism with mock interviews and narrator speculations about what might have happened. Didn't really relate to the characters, but it was an enjoyable novel.

The Dummies travel guides are pretty good with lots of interesting information about the country. They are formatted differently than most travel guides having more information on the "how to's" of travel, humour and just a different 'flavour' than most. They are in my top 5 list of favorite travel guides.

A fun, quick book for learning about some events and characters in Grand Canyon history.

Because I'm a visual person, I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides with all their diagrams and photos and just enough text to wet your appetite for places. They also don't have alot on lodging and food which is fine with me as that info changes and I can arrange hotels ahead of time on the internet. I also find the "turtleback" binding very durable. I highly recommend these and combine them with Lonely Planet Guides or the internet when I want more text.

Little Women is one of my all-time favorite books and while I'm disappointed the Whole Story version has only the first half of the story, the illustrations and background info provided in this version makes it one worth having.

This is a great resource to use for personal prayer and group prayer with background information on various saints and a prayer exercise for each refecting the person's particular spirituality. Good for individuals, retreat leaders, spiritual directors, prayer group leaders.

I enjoyed this thorough and respectful overview of saints from a Protestant perspective which gave me a fresh appreciation of those who have been recognized as saints by the Roman Catholic Church as well as those unrecognized saints. The author's own experiences make the book personable and readable and having others from various Christian traditions share their own practices relating to the saints gives a broader perspective.

A book resonated with me long after I had read it though at first I didn't think I connecte with it. About a woman's life-long awaking to God and shedding false images.

I learned alot about TR's childhood, particularly how his asthma shaped his character through his family's treatment of him due to it. It was a well-written, well-researched enjoyable read about a very lively, interesting man who had a big impact whatever his role.

Fenway Court, as The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was known during her lifetime, with it's wonderful integration of art and architecture, is the premier self-portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner. This bio, Mrs. Jack, is a thorough though slightly confusing look at ISG's eccentric life and life work of creating and establishing her collection and the building to house it. Her impact on Boston society is amusing and probably greater than can be conveyed in a book. Little about her interior life, lots about her her many, many friend and musical, artistic and literary proteges. (I had to wonder what her loyal husband thought of these mostly young men.) Clearly written in another era, I enjoyed the style though its the tendency to jump from one situation and person to another that makes it confusing. I appreciated seeing the caring side of this woman who grieved her son and husband, was loyal to friends, raised their nephews as their own and was generous to many both before and after death. I will appreciate the Gardner all the more for having read this.

This book is very peaceful and inspirational, flowing like the rhythm of the hours of prayer themselves. It's especially meaningful to hear it read by the author in the audio version.

This a great all-purpose guide for mammals, birds, insects, trees and wildflowers. I especially like the wildflower section. This is one book I want each of my kids to have when they leave home.

Interesting book; light reading. Starrett goes through Holmes' life and Conan Doyle's writing of the stories simultaneously. Great for Holmes' fans.
