This book was a very surprising book to me. Very informative about many aspects of New Jersey's most industrious and, in many cases, polluted places. The swamps discussed are mentioned in a way that gives vivid ideal to the abuse and renewal most places have received. For that matter, the author has a clear passion for his subject and translates it very well. I recommend this to anyone curious about the places never to be remembered but always to be important.

A good accounting of a very important creek. The author does a good job following the Mill Creek through it's history as it changed with the growth of the settlement of the Cincinnati area. Most of the information here is of local interest yet it still would be well received by any who like reading about geologic processes as they contribute to growth of a region.

I really liked the explorations into the world beneath a city. The idea of tunnels beneath major urban center has always fascinated me. This book does not disappoint in highlighting the tunnels of New York and the people in them. A very interesting read.

I thought this book was informative in highlighting many of the towns of past fame in Pennsylvania. However, it didn't tell me enough personally. I recommend "Weird Pennsylvania" by Matt Lake for a pretty entertaining account of this and many other states!

The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary
Review Date: 12/26/2008

This is the third book by Simon Winchester I have read so far and actually I believe my favorite. I found the subject matter very entertaining and was surprised by the amount of material that made up the overall story of an item so taken for granted in the present day. I liked the book on the Yangtze and was not very impressed by the book about William Smith but I thought this was a great read.

This was very similar to a storm stories type thing you would see on the weather channel. The author highlights a lot of individual witnesses while also devoting relatively equal time to both major areas hardest affected by the storm. While I did not enjoy this as much as Isaac's Storm or many other storm stories I primarily was looking for a more technical account of the storm rather than a personal one.

The Salmon of Doubt: Hitchhiking the Galaxy One Last Time (Dirk Gently, Bk 3)
Review Date: 7/11/2009

I really enjoyed seeing these stories and articles. While not on par with his normal stories that is only because they are incomplete. That is a shame really. I enjoyed them a lot. Wish they had been written to completion. I recommend it to any real fans of the authors work.

Secrets of Saffron : The Vagabond Life of the World's Most Seductive Spice
Review Date: 5/4/2009
Helpful Score: 1

This book was very informative on it's topic through the authors personal accounts. It led to me trying and enjoying Saffron immensely although, I must confess, not with any recipes in the book due to availability of ingredients. Still they looked like wonderful recipes and the book was nicely written I think.

from the back of book. "The ultimate encyclopedia of beer is the definitive book on beer and beer drinking. You don't have to have been to the Munich Beer Festival, know how to etch a shamrock on the head of a pint of Guinness or be on first-name terms with the bar staff to enjoy this book.... but it might give you the taste for it"

Includes: Ingredients for beers, a world A to Z of beer, the history of beer, how beer is marketed, over 200 photo's and 100 beer labels, plus 8 detailed maps of the beer regions of the world.

I found this book to be an amazing piece of journalism. The author spent a lot of time within the zone in Chernobyl and shows a depth of well earned knowledge from her time spent there. I recommend this book very much to anyone interested journalism or a large amount of current world affairs.
