Morgan Dane is a widow, living with her grandfather, and has three young daughters. It's been two years since the death of her husband. Morgan is finally ready to move on with her life and accepts a job with the local District Attorney's office. When Morgan finds out that her children's babysitter, Tessa Palmer, has disappeared, Morgan enlists her friend, Private Investigator Lance Kruger, to help find her. Tess is found, brutally murdered. It doesn't take long for the local police to arrest Tessa's boyfriend, Nick Zabrowski, who happens to be Morgan's neighbor. Morgan has known Nick for a couple of years and does not believe he would kill anyone. She immediately volunteers to be his attorney, even though it could jeopardize her new job.
This is the first book in the Morgan Dane series. The story starts with Tessa's murder which hooks the reader right at the start. Morgan is determined to find evidence that clears Nick. She and Lance sift through the evidence and interview the witnesses. Lance is also looking for another missing teenager who may have ties to this murder.
I liked the mystery and I enjoyed the burgeoning romance between Morgan and Lance. They've been friends for a long time. Lance has wanted to ask Morgan out for a long time; but believes there is too much baggage between them for a romance to work. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
