Julian Barbour is a preeminent theoretic physicist who broke the mold. He was never beholden to a university job, or government or corporate funders; he did his physics on the side. That is enough for me to want to read the book.
He is also a historian of science, and weaves in stories from the lives of famous physicists throughout history. This not only makes for good human interest reading, but also gives some anchors for understanding very difficult subject matter.
There are very few mathematical formulas in the text, but you will not understand much of the physics itself if you haven't studied at least some college-level math. I can't say I understood it all. But to the right readers, I highly recommend this book. The world is not as it seems, and a modern interpretation of quantum physics can help us pierce the veil.
