I really enjoy Downing's pre- and during World War II spy thrillers. This one takes place in Berlin at the end of the war in Europe. The conditions Downing describes fits right in with everything I've read about that time.

Downing kept me wondering how he was going to get John Russell to reconnect with his lover Effie and his son Paul, neither of which he had seen in over three years, especially considering the utter chaos of the final battles in Berlin. In the end it seemed so simple, but satisfying.

After this book, Downing continues this series with Russell becoming involved in early Cold War activities. Can't wait to read the next one, as I found his books to be page-turners. Fortunately, like this one, my county library has the next few too.
