Book Review of A Drop of the Hard Stuff (Matthew Scudder, Bk 17)

A Drop of the Hard Stuff (Matthew Scudder, Bk 17)

I've read some reviews indicating that this book moved slow or that it wasn't up to Block's usual standards but I loved it! The book closes up gaps in Matthew Scudder's progress toward sobriety. It is indeed a book about AA - the whole AA process is front and center and an important part of the plot. I didn't find that dull or distracting. It was interesting to see how the characters moved as they worked the program and how that affected those around them. The crimes perhaps aren't as shocking or emotionally gripping as in some of the other Scudder books, but there's no lack of the usual painstaking detail for place and event. A great NYC story!
