I have not yet seen this book but it is favorably reviewed by Julian Lucas, p.83, 'New Books,' in Harper's Monthly, January 2020.
It seems few military historians have noted that some of the enslaved, brought in this case to Jamaica, had considerable experience as soldiers. And the master who employed a Coromantee warrior might be in jeopardy.
"Slavery itself was war all the way down. Captives lost their freedom to invaders, labored in fortified settlements on turbulent frontiers, and served masters who viewed them as adversaries."
