This author won the Shamus Award (the Private Eye Writers of America (PWA) award) for the best detective fiction genre novels and short stories each year) for this story. This book is very different from the others because there are major changes between characters that take place in this book.

When Danny Diaz is found dead, Police Captain Pete Stanton calls Laurie and Andy over to take care of Diaz's 8-year-old son and Sebastian, Diaz's slow-moving basset hound. Within 24 hours, however, everything has changed. Pete Stanton of the Patterson, NJ police force, and Andy's best friend, is accused of killing Diaz and dealing drugs.

All the usual suspects are called into play a part in the case (such as Marcus, Willie, Sam, Hike, and Edna). It's another charmer, but more than that, significant changes take place in the story of Andy and Laurie.
